From: richard@bofh.its.rmit.EDU.AU (Richard A. NNTP-Posting-Host: bofh.its.rmit.edu.au The Shostakovich Recording Register ----------------------------------- Compiled by Richard Muirden Last Changed: October 16, 1997 This is an attempt to bring together all of the major works of Dmitri Shostakovich with a guide to the availability of recordings of the works on CD. This is not intended as a buyer's guide. Just because a recording exists does not mean it is any good. I wanted to produce a listing that allowed people building collections of the works of Shostakovich to see what is out there if they wish to get as complete a collection as possible (and who knows, maybe this will filter to some of the record companies who will note the LARGE number of currently unavailable works, and we might see some releases! So if you know anyone at Russian Disc, Decca, DG etc - DO send it in! :)). I have tried to include as much useful information as possible, without making this listing too difficult to read, so Most entries take up one line, unless I feel any further comment, or note is needed. CD references are taken as the catalogue/serial numbers of the actual CD's (most of them taken from the actual CD's in my own collection). Thus it should be easy to order anything you want by giving company and serial no. of the CD. Source material regarding names of works has largly been taken from the wonderful reference work: Shostakovich, a Complete Catalogue, by Malcolm McDonald (Boosey & Hawkes, 1985). I am aware that several scores have been unearthed since then (ie: New Babylon, Golden Age, Bolt, etc) and have either been recorded or will be - I have tried to include all of these where I have information. Some Notes: ---------- With most of the more well known works (ie: Symphonies, Quartets, Concertos etc) I have used a * notation meaning there many recordings available, however in certain cases where a recording exists with the composer, or is in some other way generally considered to be a definative recording, the CD details are provided with appropriate marking if the composer was involved, "(c)." In some cases multiple recordings exist (eg: Piano Concertos), and I have tried to list the better recording first (ie: Russian, or in some cases with better sound quality). I realise this is subjective on my part - you will just have to put up with it! If the CD has been released in the past, but currently deleted the symbol (d) is used. That way it might be out there in second hand shops or dealers in hard to find items. This is from a suggestion by Robert Parish The listing is broken into the numbered Opuses, and then those without numbers. For the works without Opus Numbers, they have been listed in roughly cronological order. For collectors: if no CD has been released then LP details are indicated Key to Symbols: -------------- (c) - Work performed by Composer as solist on the piano (d) - Means the disc is currently DELETED from current catalogues. (LP) - Only the LP exists. We list CD's as preferable, but if none are available than the LP number is given. Maybe the record companies will consider some transfers to cd? :-) * - Too many performances to enter, see the Recommended Recordings section of the FAQ. - - No current recording is available on CD (that is known of currently). It is known that LP recordings of some works (mostly Russian) are floating around. Missing - Means the score has been lost or missing and thus unlikely to be recorded. Op.
